When we started our business we were on a strict budget: If we needed something we bought it. If we didn’t need it, we passed. As time went on, our client base grew as did our expendable income. This extra income allowed us to begin exploring resources to help us grow our business. Over time we realized we only had/have to invest a little to learn and earn a lot.
I don’t care what business you’re in (well, I do, but in this case its not relevant), the following programs have been HIGHLY beneficial for our business and in my opinion can be highly beneficial for yours as well:
LKR Social Media – Yes we do specialize in social media marketing and management, however that doesn’t mean we know everything. Founded by Laura Roeder and run by Laura and her skilled team, LKR teaches more than just the basics when it comes to social media marketing. The program is not inexpensive ($90+/month) but worth every dollar spent. If you’re looking to sharpen your social media marketing skills, THIS is the program I recommend!
Lynda.com – Lynda.com is an online tutoring website jam packed full of video tutorials on a wide variety of software. For only $25 a month you can eliminate hours of time spent searching on YouTube to only find inadequate tutorials. Tutorials on Lynda are HOURS long (yet broken into shorter segments), VERY in-depth, and range from programs like Microsoft Excel and Word, to Adobe Photoshop and illustrator, to Maya, WordPress and QuickBooks. With tutorials on hundreds of other programs besides those I’ve mentioned, you’ll surely find what you’re looking for.
On a side note, Michelle Geary, one of our virtual assistant team members, was about to sign up for a course at a local community college to learn more about Microsoft Excel. The class was going to cost a couple hundred dollars. When I heard this I quickly diverted her to Lynda, where not only will she learn what she wanted, she will also receive a certification for her LinkedIn tutorial at the end of the course.
Entrepreneur, Inc and Fast Company magazines – If you’re like me you really don’t have that much time where you’re sitting around doing nothing. However for those minutes spent in doctor’s office waiting rooms, waiting for your kids’ baseball/soccer/football practices to be over, or for overseas customer service lines to pick up, having one of these magazines on hand would be a great investment! *It was in one of these magazines that I first heard of Elance years ago! I don’t want to think where our business would/wouldn’t be today if we didn’t know about Elance.
Are you looking to invest a little to learn and earn a lot in your business? Before spending any money, I highly recommend reading reviews on the programs or products you are considering. OR – Hire a virtual assistant to do that research for you!
