It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been around. Whether two days or fifty years, you’ve undoubtedly been asked to do something you’ve never done before. From taking your first step to getting your first job, you wouldn’t where you are today if you hadn’t (successfully) given life’s challenges a shot.
Today’s business owners are faced with the same scenario on a regular basis. Some choose to launch companies focusing on innovative, cutting-edge products. Others take their advertising outside the box and grab the public’s attention. In our case, we chose to be the guinea pig.
At Sutton Creative Studios, we don’t have a “No Can Do” attitude, nor do we ever respond that way. Instead, our response to being asked to perform tasks we’ve never done before is, “We’ll look into that (on our time) for you!” And you know what? The strategy works in our favor! Here’s how:
- Clients are surprised we’re willing to perform research on our own time.
- Clients are even more surprised when we go back to them with solutions AND the ability to perform the work.
- Not only have we made a current client happy, we’ve also added a new skill to our resume. The next time a (potential) client asks if we can perform task “x”, we can proudly say, “Yes we can!”
When the task pertains to software or applications (which it often does), we rarely go back to a client without having first tested the program ourselves. For example, we tested Full State*, an online appointment scheduling software, and Mailchimp*, an email newsletter service, on our site before telling our clients we could implement the programs on theirs. Hey, we would rather break our site than break theirs.
Before you consider telling a client you can’t perform a task, consider becoming the guinea pig. Not only will you (hopefully) add a satisfied client to your roster, but you will be able to add to your menu of services as well.
