You’ve been sitting in front of your computer monitor for hours and your eyes are moving in directions you didn’t even know were possible. You’ve started questioning your work even though your ideas were brilliant and your research was solid when you started work at the crack of dawn.
But now, like the light, your brain has faded. You’re stuck about where to go next, and you question each action you take.

In the heat of a big project, I’m sure the majority of business owners will tell you they worked to the point of exhaustion to get the job done. But was it worth it? Here are some reasons to take a break or a step back the next time your eyes go ten-and-two.
1. Sleep. Sleep is your friend. Even in the form of a 20 minute power nap, the benefits of sleep outweigh working exhausted. According to The Huffington Post, “researchers at Harvard University and Boston College found that people seem to strengthen the emotional components of a memory during sleep, which may help spur the creative process.” (Source)
2. Eat. Sure, you’ve probably been munching on fast food or junk food all day. With your eagerness to start your work you may have even skipped breakfast. Did you know that eating a healthy breakfast contributes to increased concentration and productivity? (Source) If you find yourself getting hungry for a snack during the day, avoid carbs. While they may provide you with a temporary burst of energy, you will soon come down from that sugar high. Instead, try protein. A snack like beef jerky, cheese and crackers or trail mix can satisfy your hunger for 2 or 3 hours inbetween meals, while at the same time increasing your concentration and focus on work. (Source)
3. Use the bathroom. I personally find that I get a lot of good ideas in the bathroom. I consider my morning showers to be caffeinated and have even used colored shampoo to write or draw ideas on the shower wall. People draw on napkins all the time, so don’t be afraid to put your ideas on a sheet of toilet paper. It doesn’t matter where your idea came from as long as it’s yours.
4. Get some fresh air. Better yet, exercise! Have you been out of your home or office today? How about a walk to the 24-hour corner cafe to get yourself a cup of coffee and bowl of oatmeal with fruit? (Healthy snack) According to the Mayo Clinic, the benefits of exercise range from boosting your mood to improving your sex life. Not only can exercise boost your mood and feeling less stressed, it can improve your endurance, giving you more energy to get through the day. (Source)
